The bimodal spiral galaxy surface brightness distribution
نویسنده
چکیده
We have assessed the significance of Tully & Verheijen’s (1997) bimodal Ursa Major Cluster spiral galaxy near-infrared surface brightness distribution, focussing on whether this bimodality is simply an artifact of small number statistics. A KolmogorovSmirnov style of significance test shows that the total distribution is fairly represented by a single-peaked distribution, but that their isolated galaxy subsample (with no significant neighbours within a projected distance of ∼ 80 kpc) is bimodal at the 96 per cent level. We have also investigated the assumptions underlying the isolated galaxy surface brightness distribution, finding that the (often large) inclination corrections used in the construction of this distribution reduce the significance of the bimodality. We conclude that the Ursa Major Cluster dataset is insufficient to establish the presence of a bimodal near-infrared surface brightness distribution: an independent sample of ∼ 100 isolated, low inclination galaxies is required to establish bimodality at the 99 per cent level.

A MORPHOLOGICAL-TYPE DEPENDENCE IN THE μ0–log h PLANE OF SPIRAL GALAXY DISKS
We present observational evidence for a galaxy ‘Type’ dependence to the location of a spiral galaxy’s disk parameters in the μ0–log h plane. With a sample of ∼40 Low Surface Brightness galaxies (both bulgeand disk-dominated) and ∼80 High Surface Brightness galaxies, the early-type disk galaxies (≤Sc) tend to define a bright envelope in the μ0–logh plane, while the late-type (≥Scd) spiral galaxi...
متن کاملStar Formation and Tidal Encounters with the Low Surface Brightness Galaxy UGC 12695 and Companions
We present VLA H I observations of the low surface brightness galaxy UGC 12695 and its two companions, UGC 12687 and a newly discovered dwarf galaxy 2333+1234. UGC 12695 shows solid body rotation but has a very lopsided morphology of the H I disk, with the majority of the H I lying in the southern arm of the galaxy. The H I column density distribution of this very blue, LSB galaxy coincides in ...
متن کاملThe environmental dependence of the structure of outer galactic discs in STAGES spiral galaxies
We present an analysis of V-band radial surface brightness profiles for spiral galaxies from the field and cluster environments using Hubble Space Telescope/Advanced Camera for Surveys imaging and data from the Space Telescope A901/2 Galaxy Evolution Survey (STAGES). We use a large sample of ∼330 face-on to intermediately inclined spiral galaxies and assess the effect of the galaxy environment ...
متن کاملA slow bar in a dark matter dominated galaxy
Aims. We report on an estimate of the bar pattern speed Ωp for the low surface brightness spiral galaxy UGC 628. Methods. We applied the Tremaine-Weinberg method to high resolution Hα velocity and integrated emission maps of this dark matter dominated galaxy. Observations were made at the CFHT using the optical Fabry-Perot interferometer, FaNTOmM. Results. The Tremaine-Weinberg method estimates...
متن کامل3328 : A “ dwarf elliptical galaxy ” with spiral structure ?
We present the 2-D photometric decomposition of the Virgo galaxy IC3328. The analysis of the global light distribution of this morphologically classified nucleated dwarf elliptical galaxy (dE1,N) reveals a tightly wound, bi-symmetric spiral structure with a diameter of 4.5 kpc, precisely centered on the nucleus of the dwarf. The amplitude of the spiral is only three percent of the dwarf’s surfa...
